I am a musculoskeletal (MSK) physiotherapist who specialises in disorders relating to the jaw, head and neck. This area of expertise is also known as cervico-cranio-mandibular (CCM), meaning related to the neck, head and mandible (or jaw). Other terms in relation to this area are orofacial, craniofacial, maxillofacial and are variations of the same area of expertise. Common conditions include Temporomandibular Disorders (TMD), which is often referred to as TMJ after the name of the jaw joint, associated headaches and migraine, dizziness/vertigo and also the vestibular system (inner ear) and ear pain and tinnitus. Whilst some of these symptoms can be related to other causes, they are commonly related to the cervico-cranio-mandibular area and are commonly describes in combination with one another. Hypermobility spectrum disorders, neurodivergence, rheumatological conditions, chronic pain, chronic fatigue/CSF, stress and anxiety are very common for people who experience these symptoms. Standard physiotherapy does not yet have a good understanding of these conditions and their relationship and therefore it is important to see a therapist who does have extensive training and a special interest in this area, to get effective diagnosis and treatment. I continue to work in my private practice and Queen Victoria Hospital and see referrals from ENT, Maxillofacial, Neurology, Dental and general practice. Presentations are complex and overlapping and therefore often people have been referred to many specialisms before physiotherapy and come frustrated without answers regarding their symptoms. It is my aim to draw all my knowledge to identify the causes of patients issues and explain and treat them at source. It is also important to recognise when symptoms require a different specialism and have the knowledge to refer on appropriately.
