About Lucy

Lucy is a musculoskeletal chartered physiotherapist, with a special interest in temporomandibular dysfunction (TMD), vestibular dysfunction and the associated symptoms. Associated symptoms include; headache, migraine, neck pain, tinnitus, ear pain, orofacial pain, balance issues, all of which can have a variety of causes and which can be difficult to identify. Due to this multifactorial nature of these symptoms, patients have often seen a variety if specialities and so it is her aim to bring this knowledge together, to help patients understand and improve their condition.

Her journey so far

Lucy qualified with a BSc (Hons) in Physiotherapy in 2010. She then began working in palliative care, with patients with a variety of life limiting illnesses and a wide range of physical issues. Treatment ranged from acupuncture for nausea control, to end of life airway management. Working with patients and families for a quality, end of life experience was a huge responsibility, a privilege and began a career in patient centred care.

She then worked in a private hospital with inpatients, outpatients and hydrotherapy and so treating all the types of patient conditions that a physiotherapist can treat. She was documented in a Netflix film called Unrest, rehabilitating a young lady with CFS/ME, whose journey took her from bed bound, to walking down the aisle. Eventually due to high demand, she specialised in outpatients to focus on advancing specific skills and knowledge.

She continued advancing by taking a musculoskeletal role at the Queen Victoria Hospital NHS trust, where she would take referrals from a range of consultant specialists, including temporomandibular dysfunction (TMD) patients from the maxillofacial team. Here she advanced to clinical lead specialist and was highly thought of in the role. However, she found she preferred time with patients over management and so took a role working solely with patients and improving their lives. During this time she realised there were areas of physiotherapy, where knowledge and accessibility were sadly lacking and not taught at an undergraduate level or that had crossover from multiple specialisms, making them hard to present to the right clinician. She was finding that her knowledge of the head and neck, dizziness, the vestibular system, headache/migraine, TMD etc., with all the crossover of symptoms, put her in a unique position to decipher the symptoms. This could be the difference between resolving a period of vertigo related to BPPV for a patient in one session or providing a progressive self-management program over a period of time, that could change somebodies life profoundly. At other times it could be being able to identifying a need for additional services such as ENT, neurologist, audiologist, general medical care and being able to liaise with those specialist to access correct the care for the patient.

She continues to be passionate about raising the profiles of these conditions, increasing the availability of treatment and developing these services within the hospital and external to the hospital. She is in high demand because of her skill set and it is for that reason she has branched out to do private sessions. She offers sessions in her home clinic, on virtual platforms and in peoples own homes.
